### Trump Attends Dignified Transfer for 4 U.S. Service Members Killed in Iran Conflict
DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. — July 22, 2026 — President Donald Trump attended a “dignified transfer” ceremony Wednesday morning at Dover Air Force Base for four U.S. service members whose remains returned to American soil after being killed in the ongoing conflict with Iran.
#### The Ceremony
A dignified transfer is a solemn military ritual where flag-draped transfer cases carrying fallen service members are moved from a military aircraft to vehicles that take them to the base mortuary. Trump, joined by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, saluted as an honor guard carried the four caskets off a cargo plane. Family members were present, and at one point a relative could be heard crying out.
The president met privately with the families before the transfer began.
Before departing Joint Base Andrews, Trump called the duty “one of the hardest things to do as a president”. On what he would tell families he said: “All I’m going to say is, ‘We love you. We love your child’… There’s no games, no nothing”.
#### Who Was Lost
The Defense Department identified the four service members:
– 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii
– Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas
– Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park, New York
– Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of Spring Lake, North Carolina 2c525eca04a4950c296b2b2fb2e0
Three were killed Friday, July 17, when an Iranian missile struck their sleeping barracks at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. The fourth died Sunday in Erbil, Iraq, during a controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone.
The deaths bring the total number of U.S. service members killed in the Iran conflict to 18 since it began in February 2026. More than 450 troops have been injured.
#### Context: The War and Trump’s Remarks
The ceremony came amid heightened U.S. strikes on Iran. Trump has threatened retaliation, posting on Truth Social that “any time the Islamic Republic of Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz… the United States will bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT”. He also said Iran is “being decimated” and that “Every time Iran kills an American Soldier they will pay for that killing many times over”.
Before the transfer, Trump also spoke about the war’s cost and public opinion, telling reporters “Americans don’t want high gasoline prices but they aren’t against the war” and dismissing polling showing opposition.
This marked the third dignified transfer Trump has attended since the campaign against Iran began. Earlier transfers included six service members killed in March.
#### Reactions
The war has drawn questions from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers. Senators Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and Chris Coons, D-Del., were also present at Dover.
Bottom line: The dignified transfer at Dover is one of the most solemn duties of a commander in chief. On Wednesday, Trump honored four more service members killed in the Iran conflict as fighting and retaliatory threats continued.
